Automation Adds to Intrex’s Capacity and Capabilities
In aerospace manufacturing, keeping current with new precision CNC machining equipment is not only necessary for producing component parts to ever tightening aerospace standards; it is also a key factor in achieving cost outs. Recognizing this fact, Intrex Aerospace recently purchased and installed a new machine cell, consisting of an Okuma LT-3000 M CNC multi-axis turn/mill with Fanuc 6-axis robot.
This new Okuma cell is one of several pieces of new precision CNC machining equipment Intrex has purchased in the last several years, in our continual commitment to our customers. The features of the Okuma are well suited for aerospace machining. The machine has three turrets that can service both the Main and Sub spindles. It also has Y axis on two of the turrets. All three turrets have milling capability. This multi-axis/multi-turret machine can simultaneously turn and mill complex shapes, to precision aerospace tolerances.
The Okuma LT-3000 has three 16-position turrets. These three turrets are well suited to Intrex Lean philosophy of manufacturing. Having this number of turrets and available tool positions available greatly expands our ability for producing more complex shapes, in single setups. It also reduces setups, by offering tool redundancy. The machine has the ability to turn and mill in a single chucking. The machine also transfers machined components automatically from Main to Sub spindle, greatly reducing the risk of tolerance stack up, and thus greatly reducing scrap.
For the automatic loading of raw material, the Okuma is fitted with an LNS automatic magazine barfeed for loading of material up to 3” diameter through the spindle. For loading part diameters greater than 3” diameter, the machine has a Fanuc 6-axis robot with load and unload conveyors. These load/unload machine feature accessories enable the Okuma to run unmanned for long periods of time, helping take direct labor cost out of the precision CNC machining cell.
At Intrex we are continuously striving for greater levels of efficiencies, improving quality and achieving cost outs. This new capital investment in precision CNC machining is one of many commitments we are making to achieve these goals.
