We have several CNC machine tools that have multi-axis simultaneous machining features. One of the advantages of this type of CNC equipment is it can produce complex machined shapes, with minimal operator intervention. Many of the production requirements for producing aerospace/defense components are high mix – low volume. This presents a manufacturing challenge for scheduling and producing parts in an economic manner. The key is setup reduction.
Our recent machine purchases have focused on setup reduction efficiencies. Most of our turn/mill machines have twin spindles. Two spindles can facilitate a smooth part transfer for machining side “A” and transferring to side “B”, all internal to the machining without operator intervention. Eliminating this intervention greatly reduces the number of setups. This setup reduction helps reduce the tolerance “stack up”. which occurs when you move a workpiece between different work holding devices. This helps reduce or eliminate scrap, enhances part quality, and improves operating efficiencies.
A 5 axis CNC machine with an ATC is very flexible. Aerospace/defense parts are subject to rev. updates, changes in lot sizes, inventory constraints, and shrinking lead times. Our 5-axis simultaneous machine tools with ATC’s give us flexibilities, that more traditional machine tools cannot.
