How Do CNC Machines Provide High-Quality Machined Components for the Defense Market
Oct 30, 2026Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining is the manufacturing method most used for producing machined defense components. At Intrex, CNC is the core of our machining business. Some of the challenges that CNC addresses to successfully produce defense components are as follows:
- Complex geometry. Many of the machined components have complex shapes that are most efficiently machined on multiple-axis machines (up to 5 axis simultaneous). Many of Intrex machines also have dual spindles, multiple turrets and /or tool changers. They can not only produce complex shapes with the additional tools and spindles, but setups are also greatly reduced and the possibility of error stack up minimized.
- Precision and repeatability. CNC machines follow programmed toolpaths with tolerances often held to ±0.0005 or tighter. Once a program is validated, accuracy and repeatability replicated, we can now proceed to production. Accuracy and repeatability are critical to successfully producing acceptable parts.
- Material versatility. Defense machined components frequently call for the use of demanding materials such as titanium, inconel, hardened stainless steel, and aerospace-grade aluminum. The flexibility of CNC machines gives the programmer/operator many options as to how to machine these difficult materials.
- Rigorous inspection. Intrex uses Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), optical comparators, in-process probing and all manner of manual measuring tools, to verify dimensions during and after machining. In addition, we are AS 9100 certified. AS9100 is a quality system specifically designed for aerospace applications.
- Traceability and documentation. Defense contracts require full material certification, lot traceability and support documentation. CNC workflows are integrated digitally with our ERPMRP systems. All manufacturing is tracked and documented, through the entire manufacturing process.
- Compliance with standards. In addition to our AS 9100 certification, for defense parts we also are ITAR (International Arms and Trade) certified.
By combining all the elements mentioned above, incorporating it into a robust ERP/MRP system, we can provide world class machined components to the defense market.
