What is ITAR?

One of the requirements for providing most DOD work is that you are ITAR compliant. A short definition for ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) is a “United States regulatory regime to restrict and control the export of defense and military-related technologies to safeguard U.S. national security and further U.S. foreign policy objective.”

One of the requirements for ITAR is that your company must be able to track ITAR data at all times. They must also know what data is being protected under ITAR, where that data is located, and who has access to the data.

Why register with ITAR?

ITAR requires that any defense manufacturing company that engages in furnishing defense services registers keeps its registration current with the Department of State, which maintains the goal of safeguarding national security and furthering foreign policy objectives.

Can a non-US citizen work on ITAR?

The answer is No unless an appropriate export license has been obtained from the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. The International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) mandates that access to physical materials or technical data related to defense and military technologies are restricted to US persons only.
